Handwoven Lupane Basket Tray – Natural Ilala Palm from Zimbabwe
This elegant round Lupane Basket is a true work of art, lovingly handwoven by skilled artisans in the Lupane district of Zimbabwe. Crafted from sustainable Ilala palm, each basket carries a deep cultural heritage, once traditionally used by local communities for collecting and storing grain. Today, it brings that same spirit of purpose and beauty into your home – whether styled as a tray, used for organising your kitchen or bathroom, or hung on the wall as striking boho decor.
Every basket is made in a fairtrade-certified social workplace, where women and young girls are taught the traditional techniques of basket weaving – a craft passed down from generation to generation. The weaving process is intricate and time-consuming, but the result is a basket that’s not only stunning but also built to last a lifetime. Each piece is slightly unique, telling its own story through every tight coil and perfect stitch.
Ilala palm is an indigenous, eco-friendly material that grows naturally in dry, sandy areas of Zimbabwe. It’s a non-invasive plant that thrives without harming the local environment. To prepare the fibres for weaving, the youngest, most flexible leaves are carefully harvested, boiled, and then dried in the shade. Their creamy colour slowly deepens over time, giving the basket even more character as it ages.
With its raised edge of 5 to 8 cm, this Lupane basket is as functional as it is beautiful. Use it as a serving tray for your cups and tea, as a centrepiece with candles or flowers, or to keep your essentials tidy in the bathroom. Prefer something more decorative? Hang one (or several!) on your wall to add warmth, texture, and a soulful, handmade touch to your interior.
A timeless piece with a story, made with care and respect for people and the planet.
